What You Need to Know About Dolphin Therapy

What is Dolphin Therapy?

Dolphin therapy is a complementary therapy approach that aims to support physical, emotional, and social development through controlled interaction with dolphins under the guidance of experts. Although it is generally preferred for children, adults can also benefit from these programs. The therapy process combines play, touch, sound, water exercises, and communication activities.

Who is it Recommended For?

Dolphin therapy does not replace medical treatment; however, it is often used as a supportive method in many cases. It is particularly recommended in the following areas:

Autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays

Down syndrome and learning difficulties

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder

Physical disabilities, muscle tone problems, and coordination difficulties

Anxiety, lack of self-confidence, and social communication problems

Potential Benefits

The goal of dolphin therapy programs is to increase the participant's motivation and support the learning process in a fun environment. Moving in water can strengthen muscles while improving balance and coordination. Positive contact with dolphins can contribute to reduced anxiety, increased self-confidence, and greater openness to social interaction in some individuals. Therapy sessions can also be a source of hope and morale for families.

Scientific Perspective and Limitations

Although there are positive experiences shared about dolphin therapy, scientific research is still limited and results may vary from person to person. Therefore, it is important that this approach is not seen as a miracle cure, but rather as an additional support alongside existing medical and educational programs. Programs planned in collaboration with a team of experts, physicians, and therapists can offer safer and more effective results.

Safety and Ethical Issues

When choosing a dolphin therapy program, both the participant's safety and the welfare of the dolphins must be considered. The professional team, hygiene conditions, emergency plans, and the ethical care of the animals are of great importance. The content, duration, and objectives of the program should be clarified in advance, and the participant's health status must be assessed by experts.

When properly planned and conducted in accordance with ethical standards, dolphin therapy can offer a motivating and enjoyable supportive therapy option, especially for children. However, since each individual's needs are different, professional assessment and a holistic approach are necessary to determine the most appropriate approach.

Echolocation, also known as biosonar, is a biological sonar used by various animal species. Animals that use echolocation send out sounds into their environment and listen to the echoes of these sounds as they bounce back from nearby objects. Dolphins, which are highly intelligent and active mammals, use sonar to navigate the ocean. Sonar gives dolphins the advantage of accurately hearing and detecting objects. Dolphins rely on sonar not only to detect objects in the water but also to communicate with each other, including their calves. Sonar not only helps dolphins hear but also provides a clearer image of objects underwater.

The sonar system of dolphins has been systematically studied by scientists (A. Supin, V. Popov, and V. Maas, Sensory Physiology of Aquatic Mammals, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2001). Most scientific studies have been conducted in closed or open pools and aquariums.

The environment in which dolphins live does not affect their ability to navigate using echoes, because the reflection of a sound can never be stronger than the original sound. For example, they can emit higher-pitched sounds to examine objects that are farther away, so that the sounds can be reflected back when they reach these objects. When examining nearby objects, they emit quieter sounds.
